Who holds this

This site is held by Te Whare o Toitū AI, a kaupapa Māori AI company and a subsidiary of Te Puna Ora o Mātaatua.

We say held rather than owned deliberately. The maramataka is not ours. What is ours is this particular expression of it: the words on these pages, the leadership guidance attached to each night, the design, and the code that calculates the dates. Those we take responsibility for, and those are what these terms concern.

Where this comes from

The maramataka is a taonga handed down through generations of patient observation. It was here long before this site and will outlast it. Nothing on these pages was invented by us.

The sequence of thirty nights follows a maramataka widely shared through wānanga and publications, and used across Tāmaki Makaurau and the upper North Island. It reaches us through the generosity of those who have carried it, taught it, and chosen to share it. We are working to acknowledge that whakapapa properly, in person and in the right way, and this page will name it fully once that kōrero has taken place. Until then we would rather say plainly that a debt is owed than let silence imply there is none.

The leadership guidance attached to each night is our own reading, offered as one way of holding the maramataka in governance and innovation work. It is not traditional teaching and should not be mistaken for it.

How you may use it

This work is offered freely for non-commercial use. You are warmly welcome to:

• use it in your own practice, and with your whānau, hapū, and iwi
• share the link, or the calendar, with anyone
• use it in wānanga, classrooms, marae, and community settings
• add the calendar to your organisation's own systems for internal use
• quote from it, with attribution to Te Whare o Toitū AI and a link to temaramataka.nz

Please seek our permission before you:

• sell it, or anything derived from it
• include it in a paid product, service, course, or application
• use it in advertising, or to promote a commercial offering
• republish it under another name, or in a way that obscures where it came from

Permission is not hard to obtain, and we would rather have the kōrero than not. Ask.

Your privacy

This site collects nothing about you. There are no accounts, no forms, no cookies set by us, no analytics, and no tracking of any kind. Every calculation happens in your own browser, and the calendar file is assembled on your own device rather than on a server.

We do not know who visits, how often, or from where, and we have chosen not to find out. A kaupapa concerned with mana motuhake should not begin by taking what it does not need.

A word of caution

This calendar is a guide, not a prescription. The names are only one part of the maramataka. The practice itself comes from observing the tohu in your own environment: the fish, the birds, the plants, the tides, the winds, the whenua under your feet. Where the calendar and the tohu disagree, follow the tohu.

Dates are calculated from astronomical new moon times for Aotearoa New Zealand. We have taken care with them, but we offer this work as it is, without warranty, and we ask that you use your own judgement in matters that carry consequence.
